Barbiturates aren’t necessarily dangerous to take, but it can become dangerous.

What are Barbiturates?

Barbiturates are a calming group of drugs that produce similar effects as alcohol. It ranges from feeling a mild relaxation to unconsciousness. Barbiturates direct the chemical, GABA (gamma amino butyric acid), into your brain and it helps transmit signals. If you take this drug through your mouth, it takes about a half hour to sink it and can last 5-6 hours. 

What Does Barbiturates Help With?

There are several health issues that Barbiturates help with. To name a few, it can help anesthesia, epilepsy, migraines/headaches, and euthanasia. This drug isn’t as well used as it has been, but it’s still used to this day. Benzodiazepines are commonly used in replace of Barbiturates because of health reasons. It can cause serious side effects, dependency and overdose issues.

Side Effects

  • Feeling of Euphoria

     After consuming the drug, you may feel some excitement or happiness for your well-being.

  • Less Inhibition Feelings

    You may feel more comfortable or relaxed. It can reduce anxiety and help you feel stable.

  • Sedation

    It can very well make you tired and sedated. People who take this will feel very relaxed, and if the dosage is high enough, could pass out asleep. 

  • Sedation

    If you do take a high dosage of Barbiturates, you could lose consciousness. 

Dangerous Side Effects

  • Paranoia

     It can increase paranoia. Taking this drug can make you anxious and overwhelmed.

  • Slurred Speach

     You might feel yourself slur words.

  • Memory Impairment

    If you feel yourself losing track of things you did recently, it could be another side effect you’re experiencing. Taking this drug can make you forget or lose focus.

  • Suicidal Ideation

    If you’re suicidal or have had thoughts of suicide, taking this drug might bring the idea of suicide back into your life.

Barbiturates are used less nowadays because of the dramatic effects and risks that follow with this drug. It can be dangerous and it effects everyone differently. 

Risks that follow this drug can include dependency, depression, enzyme induction, lowered blood pressure, and decreased urine volume.

Pregnant Women and Elderly

The risks and side effects are much higher in pregnant women and elderly. 

The drugs can pass through and enter the fetus via the placenta. If this happens, the baby can be born with congenital abnormalities. 

Those who are 65 and older have a harder time getting the drugs out of their systems. This can mean that they could accidentally overdose and/or experience a dependency through Barbiturates.
