Art Therapy Helps Treat Addiction and Prevent Relapse

Many detox and residential programs include different types of therapy. A lot of them have individual therapy, group therapy, and skills-focused therapy…but there’s also art therapy. Art therapy is a type of therapy that allows people to express themselves through a form of art. It could mean painting, dancing, drawing, sculpting, acting, music, and more. If people feel closed up about their history and feelings, painting or writing poetry could be great alternatives.

It’s not just for artists. It’s a way to communicate without actually telling people how you feel. You express it through paper, voice, or hand motions. People may have an easier time expressing themselves with a form that isn’t so literal. For instance, people with a history of sexual abuse might feel comfortable expressing themselves through writing or drawing instead of talking. People with a history of substance abuse might have lost brain cells that enable them from talking clearly.
